Ann Arbor Public Art Commission — April 1, 2026: funding agreements overview and Sculpture Plaza proposal
The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission met April 1, 2026 (called to order at 7:03 PM). Roll call showed nine commissioners present and one absent (Cynthia Harrison). The meeting approved the consent agenda (agenda and March 4, 2026 minutes). Staff reviewed three public art funding mechanisms tied to the Ann Arbor Community Foundation (endowment fund, pass-through fund, and the project-specific Jewett Chair fund) and commissioners discussed fund flexibility and maintenance responsibility for public art. A community-initiated proposal to activate Sculpture Plaza was presented (landscaping, temporary sidewalk paint elements, and colorful flower sculptures inspired by native plants); commissioners expressed support and encouraged the presenters to continue developing the concept and return for further support. Communications included no additional staff updates, member announcements (including the passing of artist and former commission chair Margaret Lee Parker), outreach/communications working-group updates, and Golden Paintbrush Awards planning. The meeting adjourned at 8:21 PM.
