Newark Municipal Council adopts 2026 temporary appropriations, multiple housing abatements, water/sewer contracts, and public safety grants
The Municipal Council met December 17, 2025 in the Council Chamber (6:30 PM). All nine members were recorded present for most items. The Council approved temporary emergency appropriations for 2026 operating and debt/capital needs, accepted consent reports, adopted several long-term tax abatement ordinances for housing projects and other ordinances (after public hearings), authorized numerous professional services and procurement actions (notably many Water & Sewer Utilities engineering contracts), accepted public safety grants including an Assistance to Firefighters Grant, ratified a host municipality agreement for Reworld Essex, and passed motions including a request to revisit a city bus lane agreement with NJ Transit. Multiple agenda items were deferred as noted in the minutes.
