Council affirms 4th/5th Amendment protections; advances affordable housing bond review and downtown economic incentive
At the March 4, 2026 Chapel Hill Town Council meeting the Council: unanimously adopted R-1 supporting 4th and 5th Amendment protections and civil rights; proclaimed March 2026 as Women’s History Month and March 18, 2026 as Transit Team Member Appreciation Day; approved the Consent Agenda as amended and transmitted a letter outlining the Town’s interests for the Carolina North property to UNC‑Chapel Hill while deferring transmittal of the nominee list; received and filed a public hearing on proposed multifamily housing revenue bonds for rehabilitation of Elliott Woods and Chase Park Apartments (developer Vitus) with preservation of affordability and no Town financial risk; and closed the public hearing and adopted R-2 to grant an economic development incentive to Project Eats2Seats (10 parking spaces for up to five years, contingent on job goals). Public commenters raised tree protection ordinance concerns in the Hillmont neighborhood.
