City Council Public Hearing (Jan 25, 2014): zoning and land-use approvals; public debate over King Street bike lanes
Council convened with all members present except Vice Mayor Silberberg (excused). The public discussion period featured extensive comment for and against King Street bike lanes and concerns about metro-area parking, schools, parks, and bikeshare. Council approved consent items including Special Use Permits for a 7-Eleven (SUP13-083) and Alexandria Car Clinic (SUP13-082). The Council approved a Development SUP for the Cummings Hotel (DSUP12-019) with amendments (including delivery hour restrictions, lighting coordination, design conditions, and a $675,000 contribution for off-site public space improvements). The Council adopted a resolution establishing Civic Engagement Principles and Handbook (RES. NO. 2597), approved a bonus density text amendment related to affordable housing (TA13-13A), and adopted multiple implementing ordinances and Master Plan amendments (see key decisions). Two King Street automobile-sales SUPs were deferred. The meeting adjourned at 5:08 p.m.
